Stories from the road

Our team at Kognic has finished an intense period of expo, conference and speaking engagements across the globe. We want to thank our business partners and our support team back in Gothenburg for all the help.

Most importantly, we want to thank our customers and all the industry stakeholders we had a chance to meet and speak with in our travels. Computer vision and the demands of building high-performing and trusted perception is clearly evolving at a fast pace. What did we learn?

  • The days of standalone ‘data efforts’ are over: Data continues to play a key role in developing ML-based systems, but it’s no longer feasible to view or manage data-sourcing separately from that development process. An integrated approach is a must; both from a technical point of view (you don’t know what data you will need until you do) and in terms of stakeholder alignment (managing data and dev as separate efforts misses the reality of how these business units must interact in reality).
  • Customers are getting good at knowing what they want: By now, lots of OEMs and ADAS suppliers have experimented with self-made tools to serve their data needs. In most cases, those efforts are eventually abandoned in favor of using a scalable third-party platform, like Kognic.

However, the value of the learnings from in-house efforts can have positive impact on subsequent sourcing decisions, the ongoing definition of requirements, orchestration of workflows, et al. While the source code of your toolchain might not be "core" to everyone’s effort, the understanding of how these tools affect the performance of your product development are.
  • Data-driven decision making is key to success: What you "think" or "believe" matters little in face of actual metrics. (Almost) everything you do must be tracked and delivered in the form of actionable metrics - across all decision makers along your value chain. This further emphasizes the needs for first-rate tools and how critical they are for a successful and repeated deployment within time and budget - as well as for providing a top-notch developer experience that attracts and retains the talent you need.

We’ll be back on the road this coming September with presence at AutoSens Brussels, ADAS/AD Tech. Expo in Santa Clara and AutoAI Berlin.

What shall we talk about then? And what can we learn together? See you soon!
